Lo scorso undici marzo piazza Taksim è ritornata ad essere lo spazio dello scontro; a Istanbul è ricominciata la battaglia, qualcosa che riguardava il linguaggio e la sua libera interpretazione. Lo stesso giorno è morto Berkin Elvan, ragazzo di quindici anni entrato in coma durante le manifestazioni di Gezi Park del giugno 2013. Era uscito per andare a comprare il pane e un lacrimogeno, sparato da un poliziotto, lo aveva colpito alla testa. Nei mesi successivi Erdogan avrebbe condotto una lotta politica e giuridica contro Twitter e YouTube, un tentativo di riportare la comunicazione a una condizione controllabile, ponendo dei confini allo spazio d’azione o insurrezione. I social non possiedono solo la capacità di contaminare un pubblico potenzialmente illimitato, ma anche quella di raggiungerlo in real time; questo permette una connessione tra spazio materiale e spazio immateriale. On the 11th of March, Taksim Square was once again a place of confrontation; in Istanbul, the battle for language and the freedom to use it has resumed. On that same day Berkin Elvan died, he was a fifteen year old boy who had slipped into a coma during the riots of Gezi Park in June 2013. He had been going out to buy bread when a tear gas canister fired by a policeman hit him in the head. In the following months, Erdogan conducted a legal and political battle against Twitter and Youtube, in an attempt to control the communication within the country, confining the boundaries of the space for action or insurrection. Social Networks not only possess the ability to contaminate a potentially unlimited audience, but are also able to do so in real-time; this allows a connection between material and immaterial space. Images that are posted from a square engulfed in flames are like bright signs: they catch our attention (emotion) and invite direct participation. They are real time interventions that need an immediate response. The selfie taken inside a police van in Istanbul by a group of rioters who were arrested during the protests in March, is a photograph that has to fight against time: on the one hand, it needs a real recognition (material space), a numerical reinforcement on the battlefield, and on the other hand, it needs the widest possible consensus, or shares (immaterial space).
