Collezionare fotografie è collezionare il mondo, dice Susan Sontag nel 1973 in Sulla fotografia. L’ossessione per l’archivio, per la tassonomia, per la catalogazione spesso si sostituisce alle cose, nell’esigenza di addomesticarle, di renderle familiari, e quindi comprensibili. Anche dOCUMENTA(13), Il Palazzo Enciclopedico all’ultima Biennale di Venezia o mostre come Archive fever: uses of the document in contemporary art (ICP, New York, 2008) provano a fare il punto della situazione e invitano a ripensare questa overdose mediatica, per non subirla passivamente.

The most grandiose result of the photographic enterprise is to give us the sense that we can hold the whole word in our heads- as an anthology of images. To collect photographs is to collect the world, states Susan Sontag in 1973 in her essay On Photography. The obsession for archiving, for taxonomy, for cataloguing, often replaces the things themselves, as we feel the need to tame them, make them feel more familiar and thereby more comprehensible. Exhibitions such as dOCUMENTA (13), The Encyclopaedic Palace (Il Palazzo Enciclopedico) at the latest Venice Biennale or shows such as Archive fever: uses of the document in contemporary art (ICP, New York, 2008) all attempt to make a point of the situation, encouraging us to rethink about this media overdose and not passively endure it.

In 1990 Joachim Schmid (1955) founded the Institut Zur Wiederaufbereitung von Altfotos, or rather the Institute for Recycling Used Photos. It is an ironic work exposing the overabundance of information, which invites to not take any more photos until the existing ones are utilized.
